Critical Reasoning

This course serves as a basic introduction to general reasoning and argumentation skills and helps students evaluate sound reasoning and question unsound assumptions.

Leadership Communication

This course introduces students to leadership perspectives and the role communication plays in effective leadership and management strategies.

Interpersonal Communication

This course in interpersonal communication emphasizes both communication theory and the experiential application of the course content. The course content will be explored through exercises and discussions designed to develop and/or enhance skills such as perception, the effective presentation of ideas and emotions, and maintaining healthy relationships.

Communication Research Methods

Examination and application of qualitative and quantitative methods of research. Featuring three hours of lecture, one hour of laboratory per week.

Communication Senior Capstone

Synthesis and extension of knowledge in communication studies; demonstrated integration of learning and positioning to move on as individuals, citizens and/or professionals. Students create a portfolio representing past course projects as well as carry out a capstone research project. 

Communication Inquiry

History and development of the discipline of communication; emphasis on rhetoric, social science, and media; theories and models of communication.

Communication in Organizations

Study of communication systems and problems in contemporary organizations with emphasis on the role of communication in corporate culture and organizational change.

Communication Ethics

Exploration of principles, theories, and philosophical approaches to ethics of human communication; emphasis on decision-making, critical thinking, and awareness of personal responsibilities as a sender and receiver of messages.

Small Group Communication

Student of group communication theory emphasizing group membership, member perceptions, group development, group processes, and group outcomes.

Interpersonal Communication

Interpersonal Communication- Online

This course in interpersonal communication emphasizes both communication theory and the experiential application of the course content. The course content will be explored through exercises and discussions designed to develop and/or enhance skills such as perception, the effective presentation of ideas and emotions, and maintaining healthy relationships. 

Communication for Professionals

Basic communication for professionals including communication theory, effects of culture on language, verbal and non-verbal communication, gender communication, small group dynamics, and speaking for presentations.

Issues in Broadcasting

Seminars on major issues that are relevant to selected aspects of broadcasting. Writing emphasis course.

Mass Communication

Examination of the process (print, electronic, and cinematic) and impact of the mass media on individual behavior and contemporary society. Readings and practical projects.

Conflict and Communication

Examination of conflict in everyday life focusing on the role that communication plays on the development and management of conflict situations. Emphasis on case studies, role-playing conflicts, concepts of perception, listening, and peacemaking. The course will address the abilities to understand and interpret reading materials, think critically, reason, and evaluate.

African-American Rhetorical Theory

The course will use the tools of both rhetorical and literary criticism to examine, analyze, and ultimately understand the various types of texts (including media) and discourse used throughout African-American history. Methods of analysis include those of African-American Rhetorical Theory as well as traditional tenets of European American Rhetorical Theory. As a compliment, students will also evaluate a text’s use of literary devices such as tone, mood, syntax, and diction.

Topics in Rhetorical Studies

This course investigates the various topics related to the study of humans using symbolic discourse to influence others. Theory and application using historical and/or critical methodologies. The political rhetoric of President Barack Obama was the focus.

Intercultural Awareness

This course will teach students intercultural awareness and provide skills on how to communicate with, understand, and appreciate the uniqueness of individuals. This course will teach students to move beyond ethnocentric views while understanding and practicing effective cultural diversity competence.

Debate and Discussion

A practical and prescriptive guidance into the function and leadership of small groups. Experience in research, argument, evidence, and delivery necessary for debate.  

Public Speaking

Public speaking is a performance course dedicated to the theory and practice of oral communication. Development of skills in speech organization, poise, and confidence is emphasized.

Composition I and II

Composition I introduces students to different modes of academic writing. The course engages structure, organization, tone, and style to help students discover and focus on these, which they will support through critical reading and organization of ideas. Composition II introduces students to critical reading to develop academic writing. Its focus is structure, organization, tone, and style, which helps students draw conclusions about and focus these on literary texts.
